| College Athletes Should Not Get Paid |
|
Each year, millions of dollars are produced from college sports, and especially in sports such as basketball or football. Any high-profile basketball or football team produces large amounts of money from the sale of tickets, food, drinks, and merchandise. One might ask, "Where does all of this money go? Should this money be given to the student atheletes themselves? If student athletes are the crucial constituents to such a successful entertainment industry, shouldn't the athletes be paid for their strenuous work?" College sports may be a big business, but student athletes should not get paid. The NCAA establishes rules and regulations for universities to follow, and one of the most important rules is that student athletes should not receive any money with the exception of scholarships towards their tuition and housing. Paying student athletes would result in the corruption of college sports.
Yes, it is true that professional athletes are paid millions of dollars each year while college athletes are paid nothing. Some people believe that student athletes are exploited, and that colleges are just using these students with extraordinary athletic ability to increase recognizability and profit. However, one must also realize that student athletes are receiving a valuable education for free. Many athletes have full-ride scholarships that are worth tens of thousands of dollars. Is this exploitation? Nothing is more valuble than an education. Full-ride scholarships for an education is definitely important, but some may say that giving away some more cash would not hurt. What if universities were allowed to pay their athletes to play sports? The result would be that the recruitment system would be corrupted. Students who are in the process of being recruited will only go to the school that gives them the most money or most extravagant gift offers. Imagine this scenario: Josh is one of the top-rated high school basketball players. Many universities have contacted him, and some are offering him more than half a million dollars because recently, the NCAA has decided to allow athletes to be paid. Josh says to himself, "I really want a nice car and lots of cash. I want to live in a life of luxury while I am at college." Josh decides goes to the school that will buy him a nice red sports car and also give him most money. But things do not go as planned by the coaches. During the early months of practice, Josh unfortunately injures himself so bad that he is told that he will be unable to play for the rest of the season. One of the coaches demand that Josh give the car and the money back so it can be given to someone else. One can see that this can get out of hand, for corruption can easily flourish when money is involved. Paying student athletes is a bad idea that will result in unsportmanship in the players and also the athletic programs in the universities across the nation. The money generated from college sports should be used to benefit the entire college, not just the individual. A student athlete is part of the university just like any other student. Every student has needs that require to be fulfilled, and the best way to do that is to distribute the money evenly throughout the university. |
